Let's talk about ToF first before explaining ToM and ToS.

ToF also known as Time-of-Flight, is a measurement of the time taken by an object, particle or wave (whether acoustic, electromagnetic, etc.) to travel a distance in a medium. This information can be used to establish time standards (such as atomic fountains), as a way to measure velocity or path length, or as a way to understand particle or medium properties (such as composition or flow velocity). A traveling object can be detected directly (eg, by an ion detector in mass spectrometry) or indirectly (eg, by light scattered from the object in laser Doppler velocimetry).

What are ToM and ToS?

ToM: Time of Measurement, the actual measured flight time, the result measured by the instrument.

ToS: The calculated theoretical flight time, according to the characteristics of the ultrasonic wave, the sound speed of the fluid, the thickness of the tube, the inner diameter of the tube, and the inner diameter of the tube, and the calculated flight time.

ToS is calculated from the environmental parameters input by the user before the flowmeter is installed (pipe diameter, pipe material, sound speed, etc.), while ToM is used to determine whether the actual number is too different from the theoretical value./span>

Necessity of ToM and ToS for Ultrasonic Flowmeter Installation

In the process of installing the ultrasonic flowmeter, we can use ToM and ToS to know if"the installation location is wrong" or "ToS calculation error". Ideally, ToM should be equal to ToS. In theory, the closer the value of ToM divided by ToS is to "1", the more accurate the input parameters will be, the more stable the flowmeter will be, and the more accurate the measurement results will be. If the difference between ToM and ToS exceeds ±5%, you might need to mind the accuracy of ultrasonic flowmeter measurement data. In addition, if the ultrasonic flowmeter is installed in different environments, its installation location will still be affected by other parameters. Therefore, it must be adjusted according to the site conditions in practice.
