The difference between ultrasonic and paddle wheel flow meters:

1. Necessity of pipe cutting

Ultrasonic Flowmeter (clamp-on): It is non-invasive meaning you do not have to cut into the pipe to install it. User places two transducers on the pipe surface and uses the sound wave that transmits between transducer A and transducer B to measure the flow rate. Paddlewheel Flowmeter: This is an inline meter (cut into the pipe) that uses the rotation speed of the paddle to calculate the flow rate.

2. Effects to measuring accuracy and attrition by the variety of fluid’s physical properties

The paddlewheel requires the user to cut into the pipe to install and uses the rotation of the paddle as a source of measurement. Impurities, particles and crystals can damage the paddle. With our 3 part system we are able to easily replace a damaged paddle without replacing the whole flow meter. On the other hand, the ultrasonic flowmeter uses a crossing sound wave. Therefore, large particles will not directly damage the flowmeter, but could be a deterrent to accurate or stable reader data because it could reflect or impair the sound wave.
